Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior representative commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
