The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
