No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
