Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
