The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the option to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
